Hewlett-Packard propose une gamme de terminaux mobiles professionnels depuis plusieurs années, sous forme de PDAs et de PDAPhones mais c'est seulement aujourd'hui que la société présente son premier smartphone, au sens d'appareil Windows Mobile sans clavier tactile, avec le HP iPAQ 514 Voice Messenger.
En perte de vitesse sur le marché traditionnel des PDAs, malgré des produits compétitifs comme les gammes hx67xx /hx69xx, HP débarque avec un peu de retard sur le marché des smartphones purs et propose un produit dans la norme du genre.
Caractéristiques Compact (107 x 48.6 x 16.3 mm pour 102 g), l'iPAQ 514 est un terminal quadribande GSM / GPRS / EDGE doté d'un processeur TI OMAP 850 cadencé à 200 MHz (un classique pour ce type de produit), avec 64 Mo de RAM et 128 Mo de ROM, extensible via un port microSD.
Doté des connectivités sans fil WiFi b/g et Bluetooth 1.2, il se contente d'un écran 2" 176x220 pixels 65000 couleurs, là où la concurrence propose maintenant des résolutions QVGA (320 x 240 pixels). On notera également la présence d'un port USB à la base de l'appareil.
